History and Mission
Who We Are
The Academy of Veterinary Ophthalmic Technicians (AVOT) is dedicated to advancing the field of veterinary ophthalmology by recognizing and supporting Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS) in Ophthalmology. Our mission is to advocate for ocular health while promoting excellence in patient care, education, and professional development within the specialty.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating under the guidance of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) and the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) to foster continuing education, professional development, and networking with industry partners.
Our History
AVOT was previously known as VOTS (Veterinary Ophthalmic Technician Society). In August 2016, NAVTA officially recognized our organization as an Academy, making us the 13th Veterinary Technician Specialty. This recognition allowed us to provide advanced credentialing for veterinary ophthalmic technicians.
Our certification pathway sets a high standard for knowledge and skill, ensuring that veterinary technicians specializing in ophthalmology meet rigorous professional qualifications. For more details, please visit our AVOT Credentialing page.

What is a Veterinary Ophthalmic Technician?
Veterinary Ophthalmic Technicians are veterinary technicians with special interest and skill in ophthalmology. They work closely with Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) in private practices, multi-specialty clinics, and universities. These professionals play a crucial role in the treatment of patients, helping to promote vision and ocular comfort, ultimately improving quality of life.
Veterinary Ophthalmic Technicians serve as a direct link between veterinarians, pharmacies, ophthalmic supply companies, other veterinary professionals, and clients. They also assist pet owners by sharing their expertise and techniques to encourage the best possible prognosis for their pets.
Responsibilities of a Veterinary Ophthalmic Technician:
Assisting veterinarians with ocular exams and diagnostic testing, including:
Schirmer Tear Testing
Tonometry
Ocular Ultrasounds
Electroretinogram (ERG) testing
Slit lamp biomicroscopy
Indirect ophthalmoscopy
Anesthesia and pain management for ophthalmic procedures and surgeries
Ophthalmic instrumentation and equipment care
Due to the ongoing advancements in veterinary ophthalmology, continuing education is essential for veterinary ophthalmic technicians to stay updated on the latest innovations in the field.
